Macro Moments Challenge: Week 6 – Galls

Macro Moments

Plant Galls on Red Campion – Puccinia arenariae

The fungi plant galls, P. arenariae, and P. behennis  look very much alike to the naked eye, but with a little practice you can split these two species in the field. The spores of P behennis are round so do not hold together and can easily be knocked out of the “pustules” with a pin or small stick. P arenariae with its long tailed spores holds together and cannot be knocked out.
